Hi all,

A few weeks ago ALT & AST were high 184 & 80, my MTX was reduced from 20mgs to 10mgs, my next test ALT 67 & AST 38, I thought good they were coming back down, have stayed on 10mgs MTX.

Phoned for my test results today, only get to talk to the secretary as there is no Rheummy nurse, ALT 80 & AST 52, so both have increased again, was told that the consultant hadnt reviewed the results and would be doing so in the next couple of days.

My worry is that when the results were very high I wasnt informed until I went for a consultation a couple of weeks later.

Should I be worried that the latest results have increased again?

I take my MTX on Saturday night, If I dont hear from the hospital should I just carry on taking 10mgs?

Hopefully that all makes sense,

Mary

Hi Mary

I'm really sorry you are having these problems. Sadly, it can be one of the side effects of MTX. However, I have had readings like yours on several occasions, and each time, the MTX has been stopped for couple of weeks until things have settled down. I've then gone back on it again. HOWEVER this is not the same for everyone and, just to be on the safe side I would speak to your GP. Don't take any excuses - just say you are on chemotherapy and are worried about your blood test results and need to speak to him/her urgently. I would also say don't take the mtx until you have spoken to someone about it. MTX stays in your system for about 12 weeks, so you should be fine for a few weeks but don't forget to carry on with your painkilling routine.

I would also ask your GP if they can be faxed copies of your blood results from the hospital so that both your GP and you can keep an eye on them. I don't like the fact that you had to wait for 2 weeks before being told to stop the MTX.

Let us now how you get on and take care.

Love Jeanxx

Been to the GP this morning, explained what had happened with my bloods and asked for some guidance and re-assurance.

She was very good and listened carefully to my worries; she consulted another Dr too for a second opinion. She says that although the most recent results are out of range they don’t cause her too much concern, although she said it is understandable that I am concerned.

Obviously at present it the consultants decision as to any changes in meds, but she suggested that if I didn’t hear anything from the hospital today that I should take my normal 10mg tomorrow but make sure I pester the rheumatology department for a definitive answer before my dose next week.

I have sent off an e mail to the department, as maybe if it’s in black and white it will be more difficult to ignore. So I now await an answer, if that doesn’t come I will have to get on the phone again next week.

I will be so glad when the GP takes over the monitoring of my bloods, as I know I can ring them for and won’t be fobbed off.

Hi Mary

It's good to hear that you had a positive outcome and I am sure you are much reassured. I know the doctors look at the blood tests as a whole, and don't usually worry if one or two results are a little high provided the overall results are normal.

Very pleased your GP is taking over the monitoring of your bloods - you will then be able to get a copy for yourself and enter them in a Shared Care Booklet, which they should be able to give you.

Enjoy the weekend

It can be scarey being on MTX and being told your liver function results are in the red. I was told that at my last hospital visit, and then they still increased my MTX further from 20mg up to 25mg. My bloods are only taken once a month too... but we have to trust our specialists are doing what they think is best for us as individuals :-)

Good that you will soon be able to monitor your results via your GP soon, reassuring to know.

Tina
